Boys Love Art Books (and more)

When I was attending Y/Con, a convention dedicated to queer anime and manga in Paris, last year to meet Scarlet Beriko, the most requested thing she was asked to release was an art book, a collection of her illustrations. Her editor Kumagai, who was with her during the event, mentioned that it’s become very uncommon for artists to publish art books in Japan nowadays, they’re usually only made for anniversaries or other special occasions. So when the news was out that there would be a Yondaime Ooyamato Tatsuyuki art book being released this year for her 11th debut anniversary (fun fact: it’s the 11th cuz everyone simply forgot last year LOL), I congratulated her and jokingly mentioned the many requests she’d gotten for it in Paris, to which she returned that those requests are actually the reason why this book was made! So heck yeah, more power to us 😤

I feel like recently a few more BL artists have started releasing art books again, like the upcoming one for Given which just started as a TV anime on Crunchyroll, or the already released art book Mirror by Takarai Rihito, so I got curious and collected links to all the art books I could find.

Just click on the title on the image to get to the CDJapan product page!

This one has illustrations of many many MANY many artists (67, to be exact), so I can’t list them all, but there’s art by Enzou (Mothers Spirit), Arii Memeko (Hitorijime My Hero), Ogeretsu Tanaka (Yarichin Bitch-bu) and Scarlet Beriko (Yondaime Ooyamato Tatsuyuki). A true gem.

Given Illustration Collection

The Given Illustration Collection by Kizu Natsuki, the original manga artist, will come out sometime in July 2019 just in time for the start of the anime!

Yondaime Ooyamato Tatsuyuki Premium Collection: Motsunabe to Regent

MTR, as Scarlet Beriko calls it, will contain a collection of illustrations from the manga and twitter and a bonus manga about Nozomi and Tatsuyuki doing the do 🤤

Yoneda Kou 10th anniversary fanbook

Earlier this year it was announced that Yoneda Kou’s current series, Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai or Twittering Birds Never Fly, will receive an anime movie adaption that will come out in Japan in winter 2019. The fanbook has illustrations of Saezuru and her previous works.

Doukyuusei (Classmates) Animation Visual Book

This one is hella pretty, just like the actual movie, so just believe when I tell you you won’t regret this purchase. Like, ever.

Doukyuusei (Classmates): Sotsugyo Album (revised and enlarged edition)

I just… I mean, Nakamura Asumiko… this thing is stuffed with illustrations from the manga, what else do I have to say?

Takarai Rihito Illustration Book “Mirror”

Takarai Rihito had some major developments from her beginnings with Seven Days all the way to Ten Count, and this book documents them all. (And the cover design is hella pretty)

Nekota Yonezoh Art Work Book “Gaze”

This one doesn’t just have illustrations, it also has a bonus comic for Hidoku Shinaide!

Sakyo Aya Illustration Book “Kuroneko Zukan”

“Zukan” means picture book, illustrated reference book or field guide, so there will be a ton of Kuroneko, to say the least lol

Moegi Yu Illustration Book “Wedding Night”

Just like Nekota’s art book this one comes with a bonus story for Katekyo as well! Did you know that Nekota, Moegi and Panco. (Hinekure Chaser) are friends and regularly table together at doujin events?

Kumota Haruko Original Drawings

This art book contains illustrations for Fune wo Amu, Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu and includes an A3 sized poster!

BANANA FISH illustration Book: ANGEL EYES [reprinted edition]

Originally released in 1994 the rare illustration book by BANANA FISH features new designs by Akimi Yoshida specially illustrated just for this release, unreleased illustration stories of Ash and Eiji’s summer in Cape Cod, front page collections, and memorial shots of Ash and Eiji.

BANANA FISH Official Guide Book: REBIRTH [Perfect Edition]

Includes a cover illustration gallery with cover illustrations from all 105 episodes and 2 reversible colored posters featuring rare illustrations. Note that this book includes spoilers on how the original story ends, so read the manga first!

BANANA FISH TV Anime Official Guide: Moment

Official guide book of the anime includes a story guide, character guide, art board collection and a B3 poster illustrated by Hayashi Akemi.

A select artwork book featuring 250 pages of animation cell and production art.

Tsurune – Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu Original Drawings

Tsurune isn’t exactly boys love but it’s still right up our alley, amirite?

Tsurune – Kazemai Koukou Kyuudoubu Illustration Works

Another piece of non-BL but you can never go wrong with anything KyoAni after all 🤷

If you know of any other recent BL art books, feel free to let me and everyone else know in the comments!

And I already got two suggestions by @minmayo8 and two more by @iamvassalady on Twitter, thank you so much!

This artbook by Hidaka Shoko contains illustrations, a bonus paper collection, notes and TWO bonus stories, now that’s generous!

Danshi Zukan – Boys Art Illustrator File

Similar to the first artbook on this list, this one contains art of pretty boys by 66 different artists like Sachimo, Tamekou and Hasumi Hana!

Arii Memeko Illustration Works: MEMECO’S WONDERLAND

MEMECO’S WONDERLAND features “Hitorijime Boyfriend” and “Hitorijime My Hero” illustrations in color, other BL and NL stories in color, new illustrations and an interview.

Haruko Kumota BL Original Illustrations: Boy’s Life

As opposed to the mentioned above, this one contains almost 300 illustrations in color & monochrome for her BL works like Itoshi no Nekokke, Nobara and Shinjuku Lucky Hole, and more!

Keep them coming! (╯≧∇≦)╯︵ ┻━┻

Jealousy Goods

Some of you may know that I’m running the @scaberi_news Twitter, where I translate tweets by Scarlet Beriko and share information about her works. I also sometimes join her livestream to translate for you guys. (which I would love to do more, but work and studies won’t let me orz)

Over there I’ve received a ton of tweets asking me where I bought my Scaberi goods, like the niginigi manjuu set or jigsaw puzzle of Nozomi and Tatsuyuki from Yondaime Ooyamato Tatsuyuki and the Jealousy pouch. So now you can finally complete you Scaberi collection!

Please note that the prices are subject to change and none of the prices here include shipping.

Niginigi Omanjuu Set “Nozomi and Tatsuyuki”

Definitely the most demanded item according to my twitter mentions. I’ve received mine already and they’re cute and squishy as heck *^* I dressed mine in the black dog and fox kigurumis and it fits them way too well.

Current price 1404 yen + service fee

Jigsaw Puzzle “Yondaime Ooyamato Tatsuyuki”

Another item highly in demand ever since Scaberi herself jokingly tweeted about making one (I’m guessed it was already decided that there’d be a puzzle at that time). This original illustration is also where the Count Chin joke originated from, of which a badge and tape set was sold at the recent Scaberi gallery and cafe (sadly not online).

Current price 2376 yen + service fee

“The T-shirt Rogi is wearing”

Now what on earth might this item be, judging from its name? This item was originally sold only at the gallery and cafe but was made available online after the event.

Ladies Size M – Current price 3780 yen + service fee

Comicomi Special Set “Jealousy” volume 1

Cute and silky and covered with little “Jealousy” chibis (gotta admit, my favorite is Reika cuz nobody is as adorable as her), this pouch comes as a set with the first volume of “Jealousy”. Also comes with a bonus paper.

Current price 1566 yen

Comicomi Special Set “Jealousy” volume 3

Comes with an adorable set of two acryl stands and a ComiComi Studio bonus paper.

Current price 2300 yen + service fee

Trading Acrylic Charm “Jealousy”

JUST. SO. CUTE. These are the same chibis which are featured on the pouch above, but this time as acrylic charms.

This is NOT a set, but a single charm, randomly selected, so you will only know which one you got when you open the package at home. You can order up to 20 charms at once in case you want to complete the collection. Good luck!

Current price 500 yen

“Jealousy” Postcard Set (4+1)

This postcard set of 4 (plus one bonus postcard) comes with illustrations from the “Jealousy” manga.

Current price 648 yen

“Jealousy” Original Postcard Set (4)

This postcard set of 4 comes with original illustrations which were not featured in the first volume of “Jealousy”. Scaberi herself said that she was amazed by how great the pink color turned out in the bunny cocktail card.

Current price 540 yen

“Jealousy” A4 Clearfile

I guess there’s not much to say about this except that it’s a clearfile, the size is A4 and the illustration is beautiful????????

Current price 324 yen

As always, please note that the shop prices can’t be changed at any moment and I can’t guarantee for them here.

If you need any help with buying these items, feel free to contact DEJAPAN at either Twitter or via their website’s contact form.

[News] Deutsche BL Manga Releases 2017

Hier könnt ihr also getrost zugreifen 😀

“Show me your gun” von Scarlet Beriko

Erscheinungsdatum: 4. Mai (Mehr als nur Freunde), 1. Juli (Spiel nicht mit meinem Herz)

“It’s the Journey not the Destination” Band 1 und Band 2 von Ogeretsu Tanaka

Sareru’s Top 5 BL releases of 2015

Please whitelist to at least know where the links will lead you to, thank you 💕

Hello friends!

Welcome to my first (actually relevant) post on my new blog! And YAY, I made it almost in time to publish this on my birthday 😀

As the year is nearly over already, the “best xxx of 2015” rankings have started to show up on every corner of the web, and I also don’t wanna leave that one out. My first ranking will be a not quite easy, but definitely expected one: my favorite BL releases of 2015. I could’ve called this “BL manga of 2015” instead, but I also don’t wanna leave doujinshi, drama CDs or anime out of this ranking. (Sadly, none of them have made it into my top 5 this year buhu).

People suggested that for several reasons I should take photos of the things I post about, so since I actually suck at photography, I hope you will forgive me for that.

And now without further ado, let’s start with the ranking!

5. Harukaze no Étranger volume 1 by Kii Kanna

This manga by Kii Kanna is the continuation of Umibe no Étranger which also came out early this year. After finding together in Umibe no Étranger and living together for a while on the island, Mio and Shun go to Tokyo together and stumble across Shun’s parents. Surprisingly, Shun has a little brother and his father is sick, so the two move into flat above the family’s shop.

Shun’s parents, and most of all his dad, still are troubled by their son being openly gay, and the youngest family member couldn’t be happier about finally meeting his big brother.

Like Umibe, Harukaze is cute and funny and comes with a number of emotional twists thanks to the main characters’ insecurities and their interactions with Shun’s family.

Buy Harukaze no Étranger volume 1 on CDJapan

The manga also has its own website with information, art samples and a list of goods!

4. Ten Count volume 3 by Takarai Rihito

I know that volume 4 just came out and it has been an emotional rollercoaster, but so far I still like volume 3 better. The volume starts and ends with Kurose and Shirotani being together, slowly getting to know and used to each other and getting close, REALLY close in the process. We get a few hints about Shirotani’s past and see him struggle with his desire for Kurose and his illness preventing him from giving into that desire. The entire volume is mainly about that inner struggle and Kurose trying to find out Shirotani’s limits. Oh, and of course, there’s the cute buttplug.

Here’s the website with a list of goods and news about the series.

3. Motto! Hinekure Chaser by Panco.

The continuation of Hinekure Chaser picks up where the first volume left off. Yamato and Hirokawa are finally a couple and start spending more time together. More and more of Hirokawa’s past is revealed and he’s faced with his family’s expectations and their conflict with his love for Yamato.

After Yamato wasn’t exactly the nicest flower in the pot in the first volume, he gets more gentle and caring now, and starts to think of the concequences of his actions and desires and how they not only affect him, but Hirokawa as well.

Despite calling myself ドM on twitter, I’m actually more of the S type when it comes to seeing my favorite characters suffer, so I really enjoyed the couple’s despair a lot.

Buy Motto! Hinekure Chaser on CDJapan

2. 5-Nin no Ou volume 1 by Eniwa and Epo

This one is actually the manga adaption of a novel series of the same name, and tells the story of a young boy who goes to the kings’ palace in order to protect his younger sister who is his only family. The country is ruled by five kings who live together in a huge palace complex(?) in the center of the country and each of them controls a part of this country.

Sage, the main character, makes a promise with the Blue King: in order to protect his sister he will stay in the castle as the Blue King’s princess and take on his sister’s indentity and in exchange his sister will be left alone to live her life in freedom. The boy, unable to read or write and generally ignorant of how this country works, learns about the country’s god and its kings during his stay. One after another he meets the kings and gets closer with the Red King.

Sage is an adorable sweetheart and a loving brother who even endures the Blue King’s sexual abuse without complaint. Azure, the Blue King and likely the guy Sage will end up with, kills one of the fellow kings even before we see his face for the first time. So much about his gentle and loving character. In contrast to that, the Red King is a nice and funny and generally down to earth guy who comes to like Sage as much as Sage likes him.

There’s actually a lot more to say about this manga, because its universe is very complex and really interesting, but that’d just take the fun out of actually reading it, right?

Buy 5-Nin no Ou volume 1 on CDJapan: Regular Edition | Limited Edition (includes an extra short story)

1. Yondaime Ooyamato Tatsuyuki by Scarlet Beriko

This one is actually a spin-off of Minori no Te and focuses on Ooyamato Tatsuyuki, the young master of a yakuza group in Tokyo who shows up as a client in Minori no Te’s first chapter. Unlucky as he is, he fell in love with Minori-sensei, but his love remains unrequited. In order to help him overcome his sadness, his assisstant/caretaker/substitute dad(?) makes him visit the group’s Fukuoka branch, where the first thing Tatsuyuki does is get drunk and then laid by a guy who he thinks is his beloved sensei (hint: he’s not). The guy turns out to be someone Tatsuyuki met as a child and he’d promised to marry him back then. Since that time he was in love with Tatsuyuki and is now overjoyed to meet him again.

This story has pretty much everything you could possibly ask for: comedy, love, sex, action, tragedy and last but not least wonderful art. The only thing I actually DON’T like about this manga is that the paper they used for the cover is glossy. And that’s only a minor detail I am more than willing to overlook in favor of the great story.

Yakuza-kun and Mr. Pretty-Boy are too adorable for words and as the story progresses you can feel their love growing so much you’ll start feeling all fuzzy inside. Those of you who know me know that my favorite smut scenes are the happy ones, where you can see that the parties involved want to be in that place at that moment with that person more than anything else. You can feel the passion, the heat and the gentleness.

I hope that if you decide to check those titles out, you will enjoy them as much as I do and spread the word about them in order to get them the recognition they deserve.

Thank you for reading!
